Quick answer: are polypropylene rugs any good?
Yes, for everyday family rooms. Polypropylene is solution-dyed, so it keeps its colour in sunlight and shrugs off water-based spills such as juice, tea and muddy paws. It absorbs almost no water, so it dries fast and is easy to clean. The trade-offs: it is not as soft or springy as wool, oily stains need prompt treatment, and it should be kept away from open fires and hot pans.
Polypropylene rug buying guide
Polypropylene (sometimes written PP or olefin) is the fibre used in most of the UK’s hard-wearing, affordable rugs. The quality you feel underfoot comes down to three things: the pile height, the density of the weave and the backing. This guide explains each one so you can choose the right polypropylene rug for your room.
Polypropylene vs polyester vs wool
| Polypropylene | Polyester | Wool | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feel underfoot | Firm to soft, depending on pile | Very soft, silky | Soft and springy |
| Fade resistance | Excellent (solution-dyed) | Very good | Good |
| Water-based stains | Excellent | Very good | Fair |
| Oily stains | Clean promptly | Good | Fair |
| Drying time | Fast | Fast | Slow |

Choose the pile for the room
- Low pile (Kolm, Nada, Rocco, Greeky, Estime, Ouranos, Marble): sits flat, clears doors and wipes clean. Best for hallways and kitchens.
- Medium pile (Rome, Havana, Athens, Kenzo, Arta, Tagab, Sarina, Marco): more cushion, still easy to vacuum. Best for living rooms and bedrooms.
- High pile (Natty): thick and cosy, ideal beside the bed or in a lounge.
The backing decides how you clean it
The polypropylene pile itself is tough, but the backing sets the rules. Rubber and gel backs grip hard floors and can be sponged clean, but keep them away from tumble dryers and radiators. Jute backs give a firm, natural base, but should not be soaked, as jute can shrink and brown when it gets very wet: spot clean instead and let the rug dry flat.
How to clean a polypropylene rug
- Vacuum once or twice a week, without a beater bar on medium or high pile.
- Blot spills straight away with kitchen roll. Do not rub.
- Sponge with warm water and a drop of washing-up liquid, then rinse with clean water and blot dry.
- For greasy marks, a little washing-up liquid on a damp cloth lifts the oil before it sets.
- Dry flat and away from direct heat.
Is polypropylene OK with underfloor heating?
Yes. Polypropylene is a good choice over underfloor heating: choose a low or medium pile and avoid adding a thick underlay. Read our guide to rugs and underfloor heating.

Polypropylene rug FAQs
Are polypropylene rugs good quality?
Yes. Polypropylene is one of the most durable and stain resistant rug fibres for everyday use. Quality depends on pile density and backing, so look for a dense pile and a non-slip or jute backing. It is ideal for hallways, kitchens and family rooms.
Do polypropylene rugs fade in sunlight?
Very little. Polypropylene is solution-dyed, which means the colour is added while the fibre is made and runs right through each strand, so it holds its colour well in sunny rooms and conservatories.
Are polypropylene rugs soft?
They can be. Low pile polypropylene rugs feel firm and flat, medium pile designs such as Rome and Havana feel cushioned, and high pile designs such as Natty feel soft and thick. If softness is the priority, polyester shaggy rugs are softer still.
Can you wash a polypropylene rug?
You can sponge it clean with warm water and a little washing-up liquid. How much water you can use depends on the backing: rubber and gel backed rugs can be sponged and wiped, while jute-backed rugs should be spot cleaned and not soaked. Always check the care label.
Do polypropylene rugs smell?
A new rug can have a slight smell from packaging and storage. Unroll it in a well-aired room and it usually fades within a few days.
Is polypropylene or polyester better for a rug?
Polypropylene is better for high-traffic areas and spills because it is very stain and fade resistant. Polyester is softer and silkier, so it suits bedrooms and lounges. Both are easy to clean and suitable for homes with children and pets.
How long do polypropylene rugs last?
With regular vacuuming and prompt spot cleaning, a good polypropylene rug lasts for years in normal home use. Rotating it every few months helps it wear evenly, especially in hallways.
